    The Bilbao Model

    Duration3 Days
    CountrySpain

Once a city of shipyards and iron ore, Bilbao is now Europe's reference case in urban regeneration, and this three-day programme reads it as one. Your group walks the transformed riverside to Calatrava's Zubizuri Bridge and into the Guggenheim, traces the medieval merchant quarter of the Casco Viejo, and closes on top of the UNESCO-listed Vizcaya Bridge in Portugalete, each stop framed as a case study in economic reinvention.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival & the Guggenheim Effect

Your group lands at Bilbao Airport, where the dedicated Tour Manager is waiting, and private transport heads straight into the city's transformed riverside. A walking tour along the river reads key urban projects, starting with Santiago Calatrava's Zubizuri Bridge, before reaching the titanium Guggenheim Museum: first its architectural impact on the city's socio-economic fabric, then its galleries and contemporary art inside. Transfer to the accommodation for check-in and a welcome dinner. Overnight in Bilbao.

    2

    Day 2

    Casco Viejo & Open Afternoon

After breakfast the focus pivots from modern regeneration to the city's historical origins. A morning walking tour takes the group through the Casco Viejo, Bilbao's medieval quarter and original merchant centre, examining how traditional commerce and heritage fit into a rapidly modernising city. The afternoon stays open: free time, or an optional technical visit such as an industrial heritage tour, environmental workshop or academic seminar. The group reunites for dinner. Overnight in Bilbao.

    3

    Day 3

    Portugalete & the Vizcaya Bridge

The final morning turns to the industrial bedrock of the Basque Country. After breakfast and check-out, the private coach takes the group to Portugalete and the Vizcaya Bridge, UNESCO-listed and the world's oldest transporter bridge, a case study in 19th-century iron engineering. Your group crosses the pedestrian walkway along its top, the Ría de Bilbao below, reading the logistics of the iron ore export boom. The private coach then continues to Bilbao Airport for departure.
