    Madeira, Atlantic Garden Island

    Duration6 Days
    CountryPortugal

To walk a levada is to follow the channels that carry water across Madeira's mountains, and your group does it twice: on an easy trail to Balcões and on the longer path to the 25 Fontes. Around those walks, five nights in Funchal reach Monte by cable car and toboggan, Pico do Arieiro, Cabo Girão and the rock pools of Porto Moniz.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival in Funchal

Your group lands at Madeira Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the coastal transfer to Funchal. After check-in, the evening leads down to the old town and Rua de Santa Maria, where painted doors turn the street into an open-air gallery, before a welcome dinner of espetada and fresh Atlantic fish. Overnight in Funchal.

    2

    Day 2

    Funchal, Monte & Madeira Wine

Breakfast, then a licensed guide leads the group through the Mercado dos Lavradores, heaped with tropical fruit, and the cathedral of Funchal. A cable car climbs to Monte, and the descent is made the island way, in wicker toboggans steered by two drivers, Monday to Saturday. The afternoon ends in a historic wine lodge with a tasting of Madeira wine. Overnight in Funchal.

    3

    Day 3

Pico do Arieiro & the North Coast

After breakfast the coach climbs to Pico do Arieiro, the island's third-highest peak, where the viewpoint often looks out over a sea of clouds. The route descends through the laurel forest to Ribeiro Frio for an easy levada walk to the Balcões viewpoint, then continues to the thatched houses of Santana on the north coast. Overnight in Funchal.

    4

    Day 4

    Levada of the 25 Fountains

Breakfast, then west to the Paul da Serra plateau and Rabaçal for a guided walk along the levadas, the irrigation channels that thread the island's mountains. The trail follows the water through the UNESCO-listed laurel forest to the Risco waterfall and the pool of the 25 Fontes. After a picnic lunch, the coach returns to Funchal. Overnight in Funchal.

    5

    Day 5

    Cabo Girão & Porto Moniz

After breakfast the coach heads west to Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village Churchill once painted, and the glass skywalk on the cliffs of Cabo Girão. The road then crosses the mountains to Porto Moniz and its volcanic rock pools, returning along the north coast through São Vicente. A farewell dinner closes the day. Overnight in Funchal.

    6

    Day 6

    Farewell to Madeira

Breakfast, and free time until the agreed hour for a last stroll along the marina of Funchal, a visit to the Botanical Garden above the bay or a final glass of Madeira in the old town. A private transfer then follows the south coast to Madeira Airport. End of our services.
