    Greece, Where Democracy Began

    Duration8 Days
    CountryGreece

What the citizens of Athens began on the Pnyx gave Europe the word democracy, and this journey takes your group to the places where it happened: the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and Kerameikos, where Pericles spoke. Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia and the oracle at Delphi complete an eight-day loop from Athens, with licensed guides in Athens, Olympia and Delphi.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival in Athens

Your group arrives at Athens International Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer into the city. After check-in, an evening walk winds through the lanes of Plaka below the floodlit Acropolis, past Byzantine chapels and neoclassical houses, ending with a welcome dinner of Greek meze. Overnight in Athens.

    2

    Day 2

    The Acropolis & Its Museum

Breakfast, then a licensed guide leads the group up the Acropolis to the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Parthenon, raised in the age of Pericles at the height of Athenian democracy. After lunch the Acropolis Museum brings the sculptures face to face, with the Parthenon frieze displayed in full sight of the temple itself. Overnight in Athens.

    3

    Day 3

    Agora, Pnyx & Kerameikos

After breakfast the guide follows democracy to its source: the Ancient Agora, where citizens gathered and Socrates taught, the restored Stoa of Attalos, and the Pnyx hill, where the assembly met and voted. The morning ends at Kerameikos, the ancient cemetery where Pericles delivered his funeral oration. The afternoon is free. Overnight in Athens.

    4

    Day 4

    Corinth Canal & Mycenae

Breakfast, then west across the isthmus to the Corinth Canal, cut through solid rock between two seas. In the Argolid the group walks through the Lion Gate of Mycenae, citadel of Agamemnon, and into the vaulted Treasury of Atreus. Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, welcomes the group by the sea in the late afternoon. Overnight in Nafplio.

    5

    Day 5

    Epidaurus & Venetian Nafplio

After breakfast a short drive leads to Epidaurus, sanctuary of the healing god Asclepius, and its ancient theatre, famed for its acoustics. The afternoon returns to Nafplio for the Venetian fortress of Palamidi above the bay, the harbour with its island castle and the neoclassical lanes of the old town. Overnight in Nafplio.

    6

    Day 6

    Across Arcadia to Olympia

Breakfast, then the coach crosses the mountainous heart of Arcadia to Olympia, reached by lunchtime. In the afternoon a licensed guide leads the group through the sanctuary of Zeus, the workshop of Phidias and the stadium where the ancient Games were held, followed by the archaeological museum and its sculptures. Overnight in Olympia.

    7

    Day 7

Nafpaktos & the Road to Delphi

After breakfast the road follows the Gulf of Corinth to the Rio–Antirrio bridge and the Venetian harbour of Nafpaktos, where the group stops for lunch beneath the old walls. The coach then climbs the slopes of Mount Parnassus to Delphi, reached in the late afternoon, with the evening free in the village above the olive groves. Overnight in Delphi.

    8

    Day 8

    Delphi, Navel of the World

Breakfast, then an early start with a licensed guide up the Sacred Way to the Temple of Apollo, seat of the oracle, the theatre and the stadium, followed by the museum and its bronze Charioteer.
