Black Forest & Alsace Christmas Markets

    Duration7 Days
    CountryGermany, France

At six every evening a new window opens on the town hall of Gengenbach, the world's largest advent calendar house, and your group is there to see it. Around that ritual the route crosses the Rhine between two Christmas traditions: Freiburg and the Ravenna Gorge in the Black Forest, then Colmar, Riquewihr and Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik in Alsace.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival & Freiburg's Christmas Market

Your group lands at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer to Freiburg, gateway to the Black Forest. After check-in, the evening opens at the Christmas market around the Rathausplatz, among wooden stalls, candlelight and the scent of fir. A welcome dinner of Baden cooking follows. Overnight in Freiburg.

    2

    Day 2

    Freiburg Minster & Ravenna Gorge

Breakfast, then a local guide leads the group through Freiburg's Old Town, along the little Bächle streams to the Minster and its openwork spire. In the afternoon the coach climbs into the Black Forest highlands to the Ravenna Gorge, where a Christmas market stands beneath a stone railway viaduct lit up after dark. The group returns to Freiburg by evening. Overnight in Freiburg.

    3

    Day 3

    Gengenbach's Advent Calendar

A free morning in Freiburg follows breakfast, for the market stalls or the Augustinian Museum. After lunch the coach heads north through the Kinzig valley to Gengenbach, a half-timbered town with its own Christmas market. At six the group gathers below the town hall as the day's window opens on the largest advent calendar house in the world, before returning to Freiburg. Overnight in Freiburg.

    4

    Day 4

    Across the Rhine to Colmar

Breakfast and check-out, then the coach crosses the Rhine into Alsace and reaches Colmar before midday. In the afternoon a local guide leads the group through the old town, from the Koïfhus and the tanners' quarter to Little Venice, where the canals reflect the lights of the Christmas markets spread across its squares. Overnight in Colmar.

    5

    Day 5

    Strasbourg, Capital of Christmas

After breakfast the coach heads north to Strasbourg, where a local guide leads the group into the cathedral to see its astronomical clock and on to Place Broglie, home of the Christkindelsmärik, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. The walk ends among the half-timbered houses of Petite France before the return to Colmar in the evening. Overnight in Colmar.

    6

    Day 6

    Riquewihr & the Wine Route

Breakfast, then a short drive along the Alsace Wine Route to Riquewihr, a walled village of vineyards and half-timbered houses whose Christmas market fills the main street. A tasting in a wine cellar introduces the grapes of Alsace. The afternoon is free back in Colmar, and a farewell dinner of Alsatian specialities closes the journey. Overnight in Colmar.

    7

    Day 7

    Farewell from Alsace

Breakfast, then free time until the agreed hour for last purchases at the Colmar markets, from gingerbread to Christmas ornaments. A private transfer then takes the group back to EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, closing a week of Christmas markets on both banks of the Rhine. End of our services.
