    Iceland's Summer Ring Road

    Duration10 Days
    CountryIceland

Circling Iceland clockwise under the long light of summer, your group sees the north and east that a Reykjavík base cannot reach: the hot springs of Borgarfjörður, the turf farms of Skagafjörður, whales off Húsavík and the volcanic ground around Lake Mývatn. The East Fjords, the icebergs of Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell complete the Ring Road before the return to Reykjavík.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Keflavík Arrival & Old Harbour

Your group arrives at Keflavík International Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer across the lava fields to Reykjavík. After check-in, an orientation walk takes in the Old Harbour, the Harpa concert hall on the waterfront and the main streets below Hallgrímskirkja. A welcome dinner opens ten days around the island. Overnight in Reykjavík.

    2

    Day 2

    Borgarfjörður Springs & Waterfalls

Breakfast, then the coach heads north under the Hvalfjörður fjord to the farming valleys of Borgarfjörður. Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, steams beside the road before the group reaches Hraunfossar, where water spills from beneath a lava field into a glacial river. The afternoon drive continues across the moors into the north-west. Overnight in North-West Iceland.

    3

    Day 3

    Skagafjörður Turf Farms to Akureyri

After breakfast the ring road crosses the moors of Húnaflói into the horse country of Skagafjörður. At Glaumbær the group steps inside a restored turf farmhouse, a window on rural life before the modern age, and the nearby turf church of Víðimýri follows. Akureyri, capital of the north, is reached by early afternoon for a walk from its hilltop church to the botanical garden. Overnight in Akureyri.

    4

    Day 4

Goðafoss & the Whales of Húsavík

Breakfast, then east to Goðafoss, the "waterfall of the gods", where the chieftain Þorgeir is said to have thrown his pagan idols after Iceland adopted Christianity. At Húsavík the group boards a whale-watching boat on Skjálfandi Bay, where humpback and minke whales feed in summer. The evening drive leads inland to Lake Mývatn. Overnight at Mývatn.

    5

    Day 5

    Lake Mývatn, Land of Fire

The whole day belongs to the volcanic landscape of Mývatn: the pseudocraters of Skútustaðir, the lava labyrinth of Dimmuborgir and the steaming mud pools and fumaroles of Hverir at Námafjall. After a stop in the Krafla area, the group ends the afternoon in the milky-blue water of the local geothermal nature baths. Overnight at Mývatn.

    6

    Day 6

    Dettifoss & the Eastern Highlands

Breakfast, then a detour north to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, thundering into the canyon of Jökulsárgljúfur. The road then crosses the empty highland plateau of Möðrudalur before descending to Egilsstaðir, beside the long lake of Lagarfljót, where the evening is free. Overnight in East Iceland.

    7

    Day 7

    The East Fjords to Höfn

After breakfast the coast road threads the East Fjords, past fishing villages such as Fáskrúðsfjörður and the harbour of Djúpivogur, where the fjords give way to black beaches. Late in the day the jagged peaks of Vestrahorn rise above the Stokksnes shore before the group reaches Höfn, the lobster town at the edge of Vatnajökull. Overnight in Höfn.

    8

    Day 8

    Jökulsárlón & Skaftafell

Breakfast, then west along the edge of Vatnajökull to Jökulsárlón, where the group sails among icebergs on the glacier lagoon before walking the black sand of Diamond Beach. At Skaftafell a guided walk climbs to Svartifoss, framed by basalt columns, and a last stop at the Dverghamrar rock columns closes the day near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Overnight in South Iceland.

    9

    Day 9

    Eldhraun & Sólheimajökull to Reykjavík

After breakfast the coach crosses the moss-covered Eldhraun lava field and the black plain of Mýrdalssandur, pausing in Vík for lunch before a short walk to the tongue of Sólheimajökull glacier. The road then runs west toward Reykjavík, reached by late afternoon, and a farewell dinner closes the circle of the island. Overnight in Reykjavík.

    10

    Day 10

    Farewell from Keflavík

Breakfast, then time for a last walk through the colourful streets of Reykjavík or a coffee by the harbour. At the agreed hour a private transfer crosses the lava fields to Keflavík International Airport, closing a full circle of the island under the long northern light. End of our services.
