    Switzerland's Alpine Heart

    Duration8 Days
    CountrySwitzerland

It is the railways, more than the roads, that carry your group across Switzerland: a cog railway up Mount Rigi, the panoramic line over the Brünig Pass, the climb inside the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch and the Gornergrat facing the Matterhorn. Lake boats on Lake Lucerne open the week, and Château de Chillon with a Lavaux wine tasting closes it on Lake Geneva.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival on Lake Lucerne

Your group arrives at Zurich Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer to Lucerne. After check-in, a first walk crosses the covered Chapel Bridge, follows the old-town squares with their painted facades and ends at the Lion Monument carved into the rock. A welcome dinner by the lake opens the Swiss journey. Overnight in Lucerne.

    2

    Day 2

Mount Rigi, Queen of the Mountains

Breakfast, then a morning boat across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau, where Europe's oldest mountain railway climbs to the summit of Mount Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains. After time on the terraces above the lakes, the group descends by aerial cableway to Weggis, or by cog railway when the cableway is closed, and returns to Lucerne by boat. Overnight in Lucerne.

    3

    Day 3

    Panoramic Rail to Interlaken

After breakfast the group boards the Luzern–Interlaken Express, a panoramic line that climbs over the Brünig Pass past Lake Lungern and Lake Brienz, while the coach carries the luggage ahead. Interlaken lies between two lakes beneath the Jungfrau massif. The afternoon allows a stroll along the Höhematte meadow or an optional boat trip on Lake Brienz. Overnight in Interlaken.

    4

    Day 4

    Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

Breakfast, then the mountain railways climb through Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg and on inside the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe. Above the Aletsch Glacier the group visits the Ice Palace and the Sphinx terrace, weather permitting. The descent follows the other valley through Grindelwald back to Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken.

    5

    Day 5

    Through the Lötschberg to Zermatt

After breakfast the train runs south through the Lötschberg to the Rhône valley at Visp, then climbs the Matter valley to Zermatt, a car-free village where luggage continues by electric taxi. The afternoon is for the village lanes, the old larch-wood barns of the Hinterdorf and the Mountaineers' Cemetery at the foot of the Matterhorn. Overnight in Zermatt.

    6

    Day 6

    Gornergrat & the Matterhorn

Breakfast, then the Gornergrat cog railway climbs above the tree line to a ridge facing the Matterhorn and a ring of glaciers and high peaks. In summer, a short walk from Rotenboden on the way down reaches the Riffelsee, whose still water mirrors the mountain on clear mornings. The afternoon is free for a fondue lunch or the shops of the Bahnhofstrasse. Overnight in Zermatt.

    7

    Day 7

    Rhône Valley to Montreux

After breakfast the shuttle train descends to Täsch, where the coach waits for the drive down the Rhône valley to Lake Geneva. The afternoon brings the Château de Chillon, set on a rock in the lake, and a wine tasting among the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO landscape above the water. A farewell dinner closes the day. Overnight in Montreux.

    8

    Day 8

    Lake Geneva Farewell

Breakfast, and time for a last walk along the flower-lined promenade of Montreux, past the Belle Époque facades that face the Alps across the water. At the agreed hour a private transfer follows the lakeshore to Geneva Airport, closing a week from the lakes of central Switzerland to the Matterhorn. End of our services.
