    Scotland's Highlands & Islands

    Duration8 Days
    CountryUnited-kingdom

Although it starts and ends in Edinburgh, this journey spends most of its eight days in the Highlands and on the Isle of Skye. After the castle and the Royal Mile, your group crosses Glencoe and Rannoch Moor, takes the ferry from Mallaig to Skye and returns past Eilean Donan to Loch Ness, Culloden and Inverness, with a single-malt distillery on the way.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival in Edinburgh

Your group lands at Edinburgh Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer into the city. After check-in, a first walk explores the Georgian squares of the New Town and Princes Street Gardens, with the castle rising on its volcanic rock above. A welcome dinner of Scottish produce opens the journey north. Overnight in Edinburgh.

    2

    Day 2

Edinburgh Castle & the Royal Mile

Breakfast, then a licensed guide leads the group through Edinburgh Castle, home of the Honours of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny. The walk continues down the Royal Mile past St Giles' Cathedral and hidden closes to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The afternoon is free for the National Museum of Scotland or a climb up Calton Hill. Overnight in Edinburgh.

    3

    Day 3

    Loch Lomond & Glencoe

After breakfast the coach heads north-west along the shores of Loch Lomond and across the empty expanse of Rannoch Moor. Glencoe opens in dramatic fashion, its steep glen bound to the massacre of 1692, a story told at the visitor centre. The road then follows Loch Linnhe to Fort William, beneath the bulk of Ben Nevis. Overnight in Fort William.

    4

    Day 4

Road to the Isles & Skye

Breakfast, then west along the Road to the Isles to Glenfinnan, where the monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel and the railway viaduct curves across the glen. At Mallaig the group boards the ferry over the Sound of Sleat to Armadale, then drives north through Skye to Portree, the island's harbour town. Overnight on the Isle of Skye.

    5

    Day 5

    Trotternish & a Skye Distillery

The day belongs to the Trotternish peninsula, driven as a loop from Portree: the rock pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr, the sea cliffs of Kilt Rock and the tumbled ridges of the Quiraing seen from Staffin. In the afternoon the group crosses to the island's west coast for a guided tour and tasting at a single-malt distillery. Overnight on the Isle of Skye.

    6

    Day 6

    Eilean Donan & Loch Ness

After breakfast the group leaves Skye by the bridge at Kyleakin and stops at Eilean Donan, the castle on its tidal island where three sea lochs meet. The road then follows Glen Shiel to Loch Ness for the ruins of Urquhart Castle and a cruise on the dark waters of the loch. Inverness, capital of the Highlands, is reached by evening. Overnight in Inverness.

    7

    Day 7

    Culloden & the Clava Cairns

Breakfast, then a morning at Culloden Battlefield, where the Jacobite cause ended in 1746, and at the Bronze Age standing stones of the Clava Cairns nearby. The afternoon is free in Inverness to walk the banks of the River Ness or browse the Victorian Market. A farewell dinner with a piper closes the Highland chapter. Overnight in Inverness.

    8

    Day 8

    Through the Highlands to Edinburgh

Breakfast, then the coach heads south through the Cairngorms National Park and down the Highland road, with a stop in the Victorian resort town of Pitlochry. At the agreed hour the transfer reaches Edinburgh Airport, or Inverness Airport for groups on northern departures. End of our services.
